Basement Renovations in Cambridge
Galt stone houses sit on rubble or fieldstone walls with 1.8–2.0 m (6 ft–6 ft 7 in) of clear height and a floor that seeps each spring. A Cambridge basement like that needs drainage, a new slab and often underpinning before it becomes living space. Preston bungalows on block or poured walls are the easy ones.

Worth knowing first
Fieldstone walls need drainage and an air gap, not foam
Rubble and fieldstone walls in West Galt let moisture through the mortar every spring. Framing straight against the stone, or gluing foam or poly to it, traps that water in the wall. In a West Galt cellar we leave an air gap and use a vapour-open insulation system with interior drainage behind it. On river-flat lots near the Grand in Galt and the Speed in Preston, groundwater rises after the thaw. A sump with a battery backup and a backwater valve go in before the new floor. The softener for Waterloo Region’s hard water needs a floor drain and a brine-line route too, so it isn’t boxed in later.

The scope, pricing tiers and 5-step process are the same everywhere we work. See Basement Renovations ›
Frequently asked questions
Basements in Cambridge: three local questions
Sometimes, but not by framing against the stone. Many West Galt basements are only 1.8–2.0 m high, too low for comfortable living space without lowering the floor and underpinning. That work adds about $40,000–$80,000 before HST. We measure height and check the walls first, then tell you whether a full finish or a dry utility space makes more sense.
Possibly, if the house is inside the Galt Floodplain Special Policy Area. Finishing an existing basement as a family room is usually treated as an interior renovation. Adding sleeping space or a separate unit below the regulatory flood elevation puts people at risk in a flood, so it can be restricted or carry flood-proofing conditions. We ask Cambridge Planning and the Grand River Conservation Authority before any drawings are paid for.
Yes. The City of Cambridge grant, available since 1 November 2024, applies to units inside the main house as well as detached ones, up to $10,000 per property. It can go toward labour and materials, water or sanitary service upgrades and permit drawings. Apply through the Financial Incentives section of permits.cambridge.ca as soon as drawings are ready, since grants depend on available funding.
