Office Renovations in Cambridge
Cambridge has three downtowns, and each has its own office stock. Main Street in Galt is lined with 19th-century stone and brick buildings, with professional offices upstairs and a heritage district protecting the street face. King Street in Preston and Queen Street in Hespeler have smaller brick blocks, where an office renovation often replaces a former shop.

|---|---|
| Heritage district | Main Street Galt, south side between Water and Ainslie streets, since 1984. Signs, windows and storefronts need approval. |

| Newer stock | Hespeler Road and business parks near Highway 401: slab floors, drop ceilings, rooftop HVAC. |
| Offices in plants | Front offices and mezzanines need fire separation from the plant floor and an exit review. |
| Older cores | Thick masonry, old wood floors, little ceiling space and no elevator are common upstairs. |
Worth knowing first
Front offices and mezzanines inside Cambridge plants
Manufacturing is a large employer in Cambridge, so much of our office work happens inside industrial buildings near Highway 401. A new front office, a training room or a mezzanine there needs a building permit like any fit-out. The key issues are fire separation from the plant floor and exits that don’t pass through hazardous areas. A mezzanine also needs structural design for its floor load and stairs that meet the Building Code. Sprinkler coverage may need extending. We schedule loud or dusty work around the shifts in those Highway 401 plants and keep production areas sealed off from the work zone.

The scope, pricing tiers and 5-step process are the same everywhere we work. See Office Renovations ›
Frequently asked questions
Offices in Cambridge: three local questions
Yes, if the building is in the Main Street Heritage Conservation District, designated since 1984 on the south side between Water and Ainslie streets. Signs, awnings, windows, doors and storefronts go to Cambridge heritage staff, and larger changes to the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee. A City sign permit may also be needed. If the Galt Core district is approved, more of downtown follows similar rules.
Not for a tenant fit-out alone, in most cases. The Building Code’s barrier-free rules apply to the renovated area, and adding an elevator to a small older King Street building is rarely required for interior work. A barrier-free washroom may be required if washrooms are in scope. Where full compliance isn’t practical, Cambridge Building Services can consider an alternative solution.
Yes, in phases. We seal off work zones with dust barriers and negative air, keep exits and fire separations intact, and move demolition and core drilling to evenings or weekends. Plaza landlords on Hespeler Road set their own rules for after-hours access, deliveries and roof work, which we follow. Phasing adds some cost, shown as its own line on the quote.
