Moving the sink to an island over I-joists
Builder kitchens in Beaty, Clarke, Dempsey and Hawthorne Village went in between about 2001 and 2012. The layout is already open to the family room, and owners want a bigger island with the sink in it. The floor underneath is engineered I-joist in many of these Milton homes. Holes are allowed only in set sizes and spots in the web, from the manufacturer’s chart, and the flanges can never be cut. If the drain and vent fit those limits, the island sink is simple. If not, the drain drops into the basement ceiling, with a bulkhead in a finished basement. The plumbing permit is a flat $264.20.
