Kitchen Renovations in Vaughan
Garburators can’t be installed or replaced in Vaughan kitchens, under York Region’s sewer use bylaw since November 17, 2012. That rule sits behind every sink layout we draw in Woodbridge, Kleinburg and Vellore Village. Woodbridge and Kleinburg owners also want a prep kitchen behind the main one, sharing its drain, gas and duct routes.

Worth knowing first
Woodbridge and Kleinburg kitchens come in pairs
Woodbridge and Kleinburg owners want a main kitchen for show and a working kitchen behind it, where the heavy cooking happens. Professional gas ranges of 900–1,200 mm (36–48 in), double ovens and islands seating six are common requests. A 48-inch range can draw over 100,000 BTU per hour, so the gas line, meter and regulator must carry it with the furnace running. The prep kitchen needs its own sink, a ducted hood vented outside and a dedicated circuit. Placing it behind the main kitchen wall lets both share drain, gas and duct routes. A new sink there needs a City of Vaughan permit.

Frequently asked questions
Kitchens in Vaughan: three local questions
No, not as a new installation. York Region’s sewer use bylaw has prohibited installing or replacing a food waste grinder at any property draining to a sewage works since November 17, 2012. Using one is allowed only where it was in place before that date. Vaughan’s Green Bin program is the intended route for food waste, so we plan a pull-out compost cabinet next to the sink instead.
Yes, and it is one of the most common requests in Woodbridge and Kleinburg. A new sink or dishwasher means drain and vent work, which needs a City of Vaughan building permit. A cooktop needs its own ducted hood, a sized gas line and a dedicated circuit. Expect $25,000–$50,000 before HST for a well-equipped prep kitchen built alongside a main kitchen renovation.
Mostly approvals and logistics. The corporation needs a written alteration request with drawings, our insurance certificate and WSIB clearance, and a signed alteration agreement. Buildings set work hours, elevator bookings and floor protection, and many forbid moving plumbing stacks. Moving a sink or adding a circuit can still need a City of Vaughan permit and an ESA permit. The work itself takes 2 to 4 weeks once approvals are in.
